outdoor range shooting targets?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

i’m about to get my first rifle and it is a 7.62X39 caliber rifle. i’m planning on going to an outdoor range for my rifle but i’m not sure what targets i should bring. i know they sell targets at the range but i’m not sure if those will be overpriced or not. and paper targets seem quite ridiculous for an outdoor range. what would be good targets for an outdoor range considering my rifle and its caliber? what can i bring?

Is there a place to hang targets? I always like the Shoot-N-C targets that allow you to see where you’ve hit – you can then make a circle around the hole that’s already there with a knife when you go downrange to check your target.

If you can’t hang targets, "for sale" signs work pretty well as a way to hang up paper targets (which are, by the way, perfectly fine for an outdoor range). If not, paper plates are also good targets.

Another good target for further out (75 to 100 yards) is taking empty plastic water bottles, filling them with water, adding a drop of red dye to each (so that you can see the color downrange) and capping them. This way, you can tell if you hit it without having to check your target (if it’s red, the bottle’s intact, if it’s clear, you’ve made a hole in the bottle).

I advise against using anyone’s mother as a target, as that is generally frowned upon at most ranges.

When you target shoot what do you use for targets?

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I have been thinking about buying some of those spinner targets. Or figuring a way to play poker by shooting cards. Have you got any ideas? Something more interesting than paper. I like to fill soda bottles with water. What have you done that is reasonably priced?

I shoot steel plates…… Your right — Paper is lame…. You don’t know if you hit it or how good you are until you walk up to it or use a spotting scope – that’s boring — I had a metal shop cut me some 8, 12 and 15 inch targets…. I set those up at 75, 100, 125 yards if I am using a close range gun…. I hang them from chains — You can hear the plink thru your ear plugs and see the metal swing when you hit them….

Soda bottle’s are messy — I have used ice blocks or shaped ice — those don’t leave a mess…..

Look this video over — Its a little extreme but its the kind of shooting I like

Will hunters in a public hunting forest care if I am target shooting at paper targets?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I live in WA

It certainly is "legal" to shoot on public land such as USFS,DNR (some places) and BLM (Some places), BUT if I were in an area that I normally hunt and someone is popping off pistols, rifles, what ever , it CAN look llike you are INTENTIONALLY causing noise to interfere with hunting activities-which is illegal in WA and most if not all states. Now, if you are in a relatively open area where the chances of someone hunting within miles of you is pretty slim, then that isn’t as much of a problem. Now, if you are 400 yards off the road and going in deeper just to shoot then you probably will get a visit from a Game Warden, just to ensure that you are not doing something you shouldn’t be. So, if there is something like an established area where you go shooting, that makes everyone’s life easier.
Now, put yourself in the hunter’s position. They get out with intentions of hunting an area, maybe they scouted it, of it is a favorite area, and here you are plugging away. They have to up and move, make new plans and basically have half a day ruined. Everyone blames slob hunters for making life hard for the rest of us, and here you want to be a slob shooter….. just saying.
So, find a place to shoot that isn’t going to cause an issue, or hit the local range for a couple weeks. Common sense and courtesy say you don’t go shooting where the chances of screwing up someone’s hunting trip is possible.
