Are bows and arrows dead in terms of use in the military?

I played this video game called Heli Attack 3, it’s basically a little military guy going awol or something. Anyways, he can pick up this bow. It looks modernized but does the military use bows anymore?

Yes. They are still in use with special forces. However, they are compact, small, more advanced and deadly with infra red sighting! Deep behind enemy lines they are used to take out sentries and or others. Silence is their virtue. No modern arms gun etc is 100% quiet

There Is no need for them, they are not used In the military; the military do not possess them for soldiers; suppressed firearms are used instead, however a bow could be created as an improvised weapon.

There are really good modern bows, but are used mainly for target sport, hunting, along with crossbows.

Your asking based on a game you played where a guy deserted the military and then he picks up a bow.. If the military uses bows and arrows anymore.. Unless this arrows reload them self’s and fire in about less then a second consecutively i would say no. The military does not use bows and arrows. And just for the Record they don’t use any medieval siege equipment either.

They have been obsolete and out of use for over 100 years. Even the best modern bows can not compare with assault rifles.

Not really im assuming, but probably would train a little or showing how to use one if they ever had to…but really, a .50 cal against a string and a pointy stick…duh

watch the GI Joe movie, scarlet uses an advanced bow and arrow. But no the M16, M203, M60 have always been the soliders weopon, easy to take apart and reassemble ina few minutes, just keep it clean of dirt and carbon and it won’t fail you. It can be switch to automatic or semi-automatic. You can put a barret (knife) on it and knife your enemy but I have never seen this portion of the weopon issued to soldier sin war, although I was trained for it in basic training.

Not quite dead, but not used. There really isn’t any archery training in the military… even in Special Warfare as some wannabe suggested.

Why? for the very reason "FTW for the wolf" suggested.

However, the crossbow was used during Vietnam… but not by our guys.

some crossbows are apparently used for silent work, as apparently they are very accurate and have better stopping power over distance than a pistol with a silencer. Which is why some people use them when hunting rather than use a silenced 9mm i suppose

personally i don’t see it myself

Longbows have not been seen on a battlefield since the times of napoleon when his french troops in Egypt faced bow armed irregular turkomen horsemen who still dressed and were equipped as they were during the times of the crusades

the problem with longbows is they are actually really hard to use and even harder to become proficient in.

it is quicker and cheaper for a military to just to spend a few hours training someone how to fire a rifle.

No, not as an issue weapon.

Historically, the bow was an effective battle-winner in the ancient world and in medieval times (Battle of Agincourt, 1415. England 1, France 0).

However, it also needed a lot of training and practice, and certainly the longbow (as used at Agincourt) required great physical strength. The ammunition is quite bulky, and the rate of fire is good but not the equal of firearms.

A broadhead arrow will kill you just as effectively as a bullet, but for reasons of cost, training, logistics, and practicality, you won’t find any Western army using it.
