Before investing in archery equipment with the intentions of hunting, you should first check your state or province hunting regulations to see what is required. Most of them have a minimum standard of what is or is not allowed for legal hunting. In every instance, I think you will find the lowest allowed to be much higher than the draw weight of beginner sets or starter bows intended for youngsters. I would not consider hunting ANY game the size of deer, etc with a bow which has a draw weight (amount of pounds pull it takes to pull it to its full length) less than 40 or 45 pounds. Even at that, your shots will be limited to very close ranges and the risk of only injuring an animal rather than killing it increase dramatically. And after you have determined the legal draw weight, then you may want to decide between recurve bows versus the more efficient compound bows with their space-age pulleys and weight-reduction technology. There is a LOT to consider. Don’t rush the selection by wasting time and money on something that will later prove insufficient. The best place to find the answers you should prepare yourself with are at your local archery dealer of archer club. Check the yellow pages for the closest one to your area. Best of luck!
You’re not going to be hunting much with that, Joe. It’s only a 20 pounder, bud. That’s a child’s/beginner bow. It takes 20 pounds of force to draw it back.
Have you checked Ebay for used bows yet? It’s the only place I really suggest anymore. You can get pretty much any bow you could want for less than half price. Lots of folks fall for the foolishness of buying a new bow everytime a new one comes out….and their old ones, hardly used in some cases, go to Ebay.

Joe,
I don’t know about your state, but in Mississippi and Alabama you can’t legally hunt anything.
Both states have a 45-pound minimum draw weight for hunting bows.
That one would be nothing more than a target shooter, or you might get away with mounting a real and bowfishing with it. I don’t know if bowfishing has the same draw limits as hunting.

Ok…really, your not going to kill anything. I’d look for a bow with at least a 40lb draw, although I’m only 13 and shoot with Marting Bengal set at 60lbs…Bear does have some good bows though, but your gonna have to be willing to spend a couple of hundred bucks…just some more info I got my Marting Bengal(the older version)for just $450 and its a very good bow compared to other high priced ones…but theres still some cheaper ones that are still accurate bows. But really you’ll just have to look around, maybe to to some shops and shoot there, see how different ones feel and just choose the one you think that suits you best.
